So, is fasted cardio to lose weight a myth or does it work? Should you do it? According to Ethier, yes.

To speed up the weight loss process, you should add some form of cardio to your routine.

“When exercising in a fasted state your body preferentially burns fat for energy since your insulin and glycogen levels are low during this period.” Although you burn more fat during a fasted cardio, you should also take into consideration the post-exercise period.

This is because, although you use fat for energy during a fasted cardio session, your body compensates by using more carbs during the day for energy, meaning fasted cardio to lose weight does not provide a bigger advantage to the fat loss process.

With that said, why does Ethier still recommends doing fasted cardio to lose weight? It makes it easier to stay in a caloric deficit and for some people is just more practical to do.

Stick to low to moderate intensity cardio sessions and choose a system that works for you. Consistency is the most important when it comes to losing weight. Do what best sticks with you week after week.
